Setup: Post-mission. Laura Costol (my character) is injured and is in need of medical attention. While others are being seen to, Lorem Laurel (clarius) steps in to do some emergency first aid to tide her over.
[ pushing through the crowd and fending off attempts to make her sit down and rest, lorem desperately tries to find her best friend through the crowds. she’s already touched base with leeds back in the base. now to find laura at ground zero itself.
yet she can’t find her. she wasn’t at the medical tents… she wasn’t with mori or amberlyn… where could she be?
feeling anxiety claw at her throat but forcing herself to swallow it back down, lorem tries to get her .comm bracelet to work again. It’s been acting up since the mine collapse and she isn’t that adept at engineering. all she can do is give it a few good whacks.
but it works well enough. eventually. after a few more thwacks to the screen, the .comm bracelet finally boots up and the familiar dark-blue ui greets her. she opens the immediate contact list and, at last, allows herself to breathe a sigh of relief.
laura is available. ]
Laura Costol, you better be alive and you better tell me where you are. Right now.
( laura’s voice rises over the static and feedback. she sounds strong and clear through the .comm audio. ) Sitting on a barrel. Near the collapsed entry. Won’t be going anywhere.
[ cursing her friend for being so reckless and cursing herself for not thinking of that in the first place, lorem tells her ETA and hurries to the location. (after grabbing a few things from a nearby tent. never hurts to be too careful in times like these.)
her ankle still hurts from the nasty fall she endured but she picks up the face when she sees a familiar form, slump on top of a barrel, near the collapsed entry. ]
When did you get here? Why are you here? You should be having someone look at your injuries by now.
( laura cracks a grin, relieved to see a friendly face. more than amused to see how annoyed said friendly face is. )
I told the medical team to see everyone else first before me and I made sure it sounded like an order. I’ll live with these booboos. The others needed to be seen to first.
Of course you would tell them that. [ it’s so painfully laura that is hurts her heart.
allowing herself to now fuss over laura’s injuries, lorem did her best to appear calm as possible while she prepares the disinfectant and bandages, looking over at laura’s face every now and then.
…she’s doing her best. ]
Are you okay, Laura? [ she begins to treat one of the nastier looking cuts on laura’s face, the one that hasn’t stopped bleeding. ] That looks like it hurts.
I should be fine. ( laura wills herself to believe that. her injuries be damned— others had to be seen to first. If she didn’t have the urge to scream or die, she’ll survive. ) Just need a chance to rest and I’ll be right as rain…
( laura grunts under her breath when the wipe is pressed to her cut cheek. ) Let me— Let me sit up some more. It’ll be easier for you.
[ but lorem takes a step back all the same. she knows her friend well enough to know when laura is making a statement and when laura is making a suggestion.
( laura tries to play it cool to assuage the worry written on lorem’s face. She attempts to do so by stretching out her limbs and it proves to be a mistake. )
( pain runs up and down her sore form and it is intense. she does her best to hide her pained wince but a cruse slips through, ) Fuck—
[ she notices the winces and the little twitches. she hears the cursing.
of course she’s quickly by laura’s side and trying to inspect her more thoroughly, wondering what she had missed in her earlier examination. ]
Do you need pain medication? I have some with me. [ quickly swiped from one of the medical personnel while looking for laura but her friend doesn’t need to know that. ]
( laura does her best to make that final. she waves a hand in the air, attempting to evoke a sense of casualness. all the while she fighting against the dull throb of her sore limbs and back. )( will this attempt work on her friend? )
Since you’re clearly in a lot of pains, I won’t rub it in your face and say I told you so.
[ liking to think she’s classy enough to not stoop so slow, lorem doesn’t say anything while handing laura the pain medication.
she is, however, allowing her expression — pursed lips, furrowed brow, and very disapproving expression — speak volumes in her stead. be glad she got the ones that are easy to dry swallow. ]
I know you mean it. [ lorem now claps her hand, gesturing for laura to move this way and that. ] Now let me check your injuries and see what I can patch up or not. Come on.
( laura does her best to endure lorem’s tender and thorough mercies. the medication is kicking in and having the cuts tended to is a relief. she doesn’t feel like total shit anymore. )
( still so sore. something made clear whenever lorem presses down on a forming bruise. ) Fuck. That’s going to leave a mark.
[ lorem sends laura a look, finding that joke very, very unfunny given what they’ve been through.
she does try to let it slide. ] You will, you will… I’ll have Eps look you over, though. Just to be sure.
And, next time, please do us a favour and don’t be so selflessly selfish, Laura. Have the medical team look after you soon as possible. It’s their job.
[ she’s quick to shoot back with a question of her own: ]
What’s the point of being a leader if you might leave us without a leader?
[ she tries to put heat into her words but the brief squeeze of laura's hand, desperate and strong, will probably reveal her real feelings on the thought. ]
[ and lore allows herself to soften at that admission, happy that she made that bit clear with laura. hopefully, this will stick this time around. ] Just… be more careful next time.
And stay here and rest, okay? I’ll go get someone, preferably Eps, but it might take a while. It’s a miracle we all got out of that in one piece.
